Aluminum has several types that are used for making dies. They include aluminum, brass, chrome-molybdenum, Inconel (which is made from nickel and chromium), and Hastelloy. Aluminum die casting uses A380.
There are many different types of aluminum alloys available, which makes them a very versatile material. However, there are two common types of aluminum that are most widely used in the die casting industry.
These are the alloys with the chemical composition Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Si-Mg. They are both available in cast and wrought A380 diecast aluminum alloys. The cast alloy has a lower percentage of zinc in it than the wrought alloy.
The cast alloy has a higher degree of toughness than the wrought alloy. Aluminum alloys are also available in both semi-solid and solidified states.
The semi-solid alloys are useful because they provide high mechanical properties and formability in the cast state. They are, however, difficult to pour into large molds. This is why wrought materials are preferred for casting dies.
